"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14 NIV)
In this passage "wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction" defines the many Old Covenant laws and practices that ultimately led to futility and were ineffective in producing true heart change and life. The Old covenant is full of rituals that were never intended to bring people closer to God but only leave them more frustrated at the end of the day. None of the Old Covenant practices truly brought people into intimate relationship with God. The system of the Law did not give people access to God's heart and covenant love. These laws only made people tolerable to God and forebodingly approachable to Him.
"Enter the narrow gate" is not an illustration of walking a tightrope of perfection or carefully following a prescribed formula that get us closer to God (as so many believe and teach). "Small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" means that few discover the simplicity of trusting JESUS! Receiving God's Grace and walking in the joy of relationship with Him is the ONLY way to know life as God intended (John 10:10 & 14:6).
While so many are prescribing formulas and methods to draw near to God, remember to be narrow minded. Simply enjoy your relationship with Jesus (that only He provided) and delight in the total love and acceptance of God through Christ. This is the way that we truly draw near to God.
